P3.K220: Prevalence of Suicidal Behavior on Adolescents exposed to at Home Violence

Background: Suicide is the second leading cause of death among children in the United States. This study examines the correlation between adolescent suicidal behaviors and exposure to violence and abuse at home, using data from the Minnesota Student Survey 2022.

Methods: Adopting a cross-sectional design, the analysis encompassed responses from 61,068 students in grades 9 and 11 in the state of Minnesota focusing on their experiences of violence and mental health. Suicidal behavior was assessed through questions regarding suicide contemplation and attempts, while exposure to abuse was determined by inquiries about verbal and physical aggression. Descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, and logistic regression models were employed.

Results: Among all participants, 25.92% reported suicidal behavior. Among those with suicidal behavior, 59% reported physical abuse alone, 57.81% reported verbal abuse alone, and 55% reported both. Logistic regression revealed that verbally or physically abused adolescents had over four times the odds of exhibiting suicidal behavior (OR=4.2, 95% CL=4.2-4.6), after adjusting for demographics and familial factors.

Conclusion: The findings affirm a significant link between home violence and increased suicidal behaviors in adolescents. Targeted interventions and violence prevention efforts within schools and communities are critical. Despite its limitations, the study highlights the critical need for addressing domestic abuse to mitigate suicidality among youth.
