Dr. Alok Patel is a physician, journalist, host, and medical correspondent who firmly believes humor and relatability should drive science communication. In addition to being a practicing pediatric hospitalist, he is a medical contributor for ABC News with recurrent appearances on Good Morning America, World News Tonight, ABC News Live and is a special correspondent for ABC7 San Francisco. He is the co-host of PBS Vitals and was co-host of NOVA’s Parentalogic and hosted the first two seasons of the NOVA Now science podcast, which was a Shorty Award finalist. He also hosts a popular web series for Medscape, The Hospitalist Retort, which won a prestigious Eddy Award, and produced two seasons of the medical mystery show, Something’s Killing Me, for CNN/HLN.
Dr. Patel is on faculty at Stanford Children’s Hospital and is the department head of media strategy and communication. He attended medical school at the University of Arizona (Bear Down!), completed his pediatric residency at Seattle Children’s Hospital, and was previously on faculty at Columbia University. He has served as an advisor for several companies and nonprofits and was on the founding team of the start-up, Medumo, a patient navigation platform, which was acquired by Philips.
In his rare downtime, you can catch him practicing martial arts, discovering new music, chasing his rambunctious toddler or spending time with his wife, a renowned wedding/event planner, who is more creative, talented, and far better-looking than he is.
