P3.E086: Caregiver Acceptability of Patient-facing Climate Health Education During Pediatric Asthma Clinic Visits in Washington, DC.

Background: Climate change poses a disproportionate and growing threat to children, especially those living in disinvested communities. Various factors of climate change, including heat, pollen, mold, and air quality, impact both incidence and outcomes of pediatric asthma. However, integration of climate health education into pediatric asthma clinic visits is not standard practice. This study aims to assess caregiver acceptability and perception of understanding of climate health following a short educational video administered during a pediatric asthma clinic visit.

Methods: We conducted an observational, cross-sectional study of a convenience sample of English and Spanish speaking caregivers attending an asthma clinic at a large urban children’s hospital which primarily serves families in disinvested communities. Caregivers were shown a 4-minute climate health educational video and received a summary document that reinforced important content. Following the video, the caregiver completed a 5-point Likert-scale questionnaire to assess acceptability and perception of understanding. Questions are shown in Table 2.

Results: Of 27 caregiver respondents, 88.9% preferred English and 11.1% preferred Spanish, 85.2% were female and 14.8% were male; 92.6% were between 25-44 years old. 92.6% were parents and 3.7% were grandparents. 50% of the respondents reported prior exposure to climate health education in the healthcare setting (See Table 1). 93.3% of caregivers either strongly agreed or agreed with questions assessing acceptability of climate change education: 100% in a medical setting, 92.3% via healthcare providers or equivalent, 96.3% regarding a specific disease, and 84.6% in other outpatient clinic focuses. 94.3% of caregivers either strongly agreed or agreed with questions assessing perception of their understanding of the climate health education following the video. 92.3% of caregivers reported they strongly agreed or agreed that they planned to use the information while caring for their child with asthma, and 92.6% felt motivated to learn more (See Table 2).

Conclusion: Caregivers demonstrated overwhelming acceptability of video-based climate health education in an urban, asthma clinic setting. Almost all the respondents perceived they understood and learned the content and reported that they were motivated to learn more and use the information. Our findings are encouraging and support future efforts to integrate climate health education into pediatric asthma clinic workflow. Larger studies to understand effectiveness in different settings and acceptability by different populations are warranted.
