P2.F102: National Fellowship Curriculum: If You Build It, Will They Come?

Background: With rising clinical volumes, increasing patient acuity, and significant staffing strain, academic time dedicated to teaching and educational materials development is limited. Freely shared, peer-reviewed educational materials to support learners are limited, particularly for subspecialty fellows. Individuals considering creation of shared curricular materials would benefit from information about the utilization of existing products. Our aim is to describe the utilization patterns of a nationally available, free-of-cost, peer reviewed curriculum developed for neonatal-perinatal medicine (NPM) fellows.

Methods: The Organization of Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Training Program Directors formed the National Neonatology Curriculum Committee (NNCC) in 2017. After completing a needs assessment, the NNCC created a structured system for creating peer-reviewed physiology and core curriculum educational materials using a flipped classroom approach entitled the National Neonatology Curriculum (NCC). Topics were identified and each was then subdivided into units termed modules. The initial modules became available online in 2018 at MedEdOnTheGo.com, with continued content creation to present. We used module access data from the web-hosting provider to analyze the use of both individual modules and topics. A single quarter sample of users in 2023 was used to evaluate the roles and fields of work of each user. Descriptive analysis was used to show trends in utilization over time. Author surveys have previously shown that creation of a flipped classroom module generally requires 17 hours for development and iterative peer-review.

Results: Since the launch of the NNC, 57 modules covering 7 topics have been released (Table 1). Modules receive a median of 35.7 unique views per quarter (IQR 24, 50) and viewership has held steady or grown for the majority of modules. In addition, the pattern of views showed that the gastroenterology and bilirubin modules were heavily used during the active period of the NNCC educational trial in 2018 (PMID 35660790), and all the available modules were heavily used during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic (FIgure 1). The most often viewed modules center on the respiratory system and neonatal resuscitation, the largest areas of American Board of Pediatrics certification exam content for Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine. Viewers of the modules include trainees, attending physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, and respiratory therapists.

Conclusion: The NNC demonstrates a high amount of multiprofessional utilization of nationally available, free-of-cost, shared educational materials. Specialties should consider leveraging their national organizations to create their own shared curriculum, acknowledging that while this requires considerable investment of time for its creation, from authors and editors, it will be extensively utilized by a multiprofessional group of learners and educators.
